Philadelphyinz is a DJ team consisting of Skinny Friedman and Apt One. We throw monthly parties in Philadelphia and New York. We also go all over the country bringing our sound to new and unfamiliar places.
We mostly spin rap, funk, house, club and disco music, but we try to get into anything people are dancing to. We also make mixtapes and produce our own music. For more information, check out our bio.
As for our name…
In Pittsburgh, you commonly hear the contraction “yinz,” which is short for “you ones.” Its use is limted to the Pittsburgh area and the steel-producing regions of Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and a portion of Eastern Ohio. It is a staple of the somewhat brash patois known as Pittsburghese, a dialect in which many of your favorite quarterbacks of the last three decades are fluent.
Philadelphyinz began as a party in Philly run by a couple of Pittsburgh ex-pats on the east coast. So, Philadelphyinz isn’t a cornball way to refer to multiple individuals from Philly. It’s a combo of “Philadelphia” and “Yinz.”
If you want more, here’s an NPR short, A Primer on Pittsburghese.
