If we were to talk about the most influential music of the “Aught” decade, we’d be talking about LCD Soundsystem, MIA, Justin Timberlake, The Rapture, OutKast, Soulja Boy (I know but think about it), Dipset, Daft Punk, David Guetta, etc., There are plenty of lists where people compile a recounting of the “Top” of the decade while co-mingling overall influence with the reviewiers personal tastes. I’m much more interested in arranging the decade in some sort of autobiographical picture so as to actually experience the whole thing in reverse. The year 2000 seems like ancient history when you do that.
Without including any of the zillions of classic records that I was fixated on the last 10 years, here are the ten songs made in the decade 200-2009 about which I was most obsessed (in no particular order):
Debonair Samir – Samir’s Theme (2000)^
Cannibal Ox – Iron Galaxy (2001)
J-Live – Them That’s Not (2001)*
Daft Punk – Aerodynamic (2001)
Freeway f/ Peedi Crakk – Flipside (2003)
Too $hort – Blow The Whistle (2006)
Lifelike & Kris Menace – Discopolis (2006)
Young Leek – Jiggle It (2006)
DJ Mehdi – Signatune (Bangalter Edit) (2007)
Friendly Fires – Paris f/ Au Revoir Simone (Aeroplane Remix) (2008)
Eric Prydz – Pjanoo (2008)
^-I wasn’t aware of this track until the Unruly release in ’04 or ’05 but it appeared on wax as early as ’00.
*-Yeah I know this song had been appearing on bootlegs for almost 6 years by this time, but ’01 is when the “legit” bootleg dropped so I’m callin’ that.
I’d offer a description or narration here, but pretty much all of them would read “when I first heard that shit I was like ‘WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?!?!’ Then I dropped that track / listened to that shit in the carDISCMAN/iPod for like two months and everybody I know was like ‘Quit plain that fucking song.’”
And yeah, I know that’s 11 songs. One to grow on I suppose.
